Khar Zurkhnii Khuh Nuur Lake

We will leave early in the morning for a driving day to the east of Mongolia. We’ll pass the industrial town of Baganuur to drive further into the Khentii Mountain Range. In the evening we will reach Khuh Nuur Lake.

Khukh Nuur located in the Khar Zurkh Mountains is a beautiful fresh water lake surrounded by pine forests. The lake lays at an altitude of 1650 meters above sea level. It’s at this lake that 800 years ago or in 1200, Temujin came to the Mongolian throne was given the honorific title of “Genghis Khan“, Mongolia’s supreme leader. The lake is an important migration point for birds and you can spot many waders and shore birds here.

Baldan Bereeven

After having breakfast, we will hike around the beautiful Khukh Nuur Lake for a couple of hours. Later that day we’ll leave for the monastery of Baldan Bereeven. The remains of the Bereeven Monastery are located in the depression of the Bereeven Mountain. The monastery was built by granite stone in 1777. The monastery used to house about 8000 monks and was the religious center of Eastern Mongolia. The God of “Manzushir” with 3 meters high and 2 meters wide was crafted on the steep and reddish, granite stone is to the south east of the monastery. The main worship hall was built in 1813. It had 32 columns and 3 stairs, which called “Utai gumben” but it was broken beside the wall. Last few years’ project financed by America has significantly restored it. It was the religious centre of the eastern Khalkh Mongols. The buildings were mainly constructed of stone and wood because of its location near the forests.

Oglogchiin Wall

Today we’ll have a short drive up to the Oglogchiin Wall. Oglogch Wall is located at the base of Daichin Mountain, 45km southwest of Batshireet soum. The wall, 3km in length, is made entirely of stones without the use of mortar.

In year 2005, Mongolian-American joint expedition team “Genghis Khan” discovered approximately 60 tombs near the wall. The archeologists believe that Oglochiin Kherem may be a burial place of great Mongolian figures, such as Genghis or Kublai Khan.

We’ll pass the village of Binder and go on driving along the Onon River to reach in the evening Dadal, birth place of Chingiss Khan, in the evening. Onon river starts to flow from the range of Ikh Khentii Mountains and flows through Dornod province for 298 km and Inner Baikal’s region for 510 km and it drains into Shika river. The size of this river’s basin is 96.2 km and many rivers such as Eg, Barkli, Khurkli, Shuus, Agats and Khoyorkhon drain into it. Thus it has much source of water and well clearing. This river is home to about 30 kinds of fish. Many interesting events of Mongolian history related to the period of Chinggis khan took place in the basin of this river.

Dadal, the Birthplace of Genghis Khan

Dadal is a gorgeous area of lakes, rivers, forests and log huts (very few people live in gers), reminiscent of Siberia, which is only 25km to the north.

We’ll spend the day discovering the birthplace of Chingiss Khan. We’ll visit the Chingis Khan monument and the Chingis Khan source. Genghis Khan Monument. It was erected for the 750 years’ anniversary of the “Secret History of Mongols”. Khajuu Bulag is a small spring in the middle of the forest near the Bayan River, from which Chinggis Khaan is said to have drunk. A bit east of this spring is Deluun Boldog, which locals consider the birthplace of Temujin (childhood name of Chinggis Khaan). The hill is topped with a stone monument dedicated in 1990 to honour the 750th anniversary The Secret History of the Mongols, a 13th century chronicle of the empire.

The area is beautiful for hiking.
